Bad Ass Battle Theme

The one track that we always have fun making while working on RPG soundtracks is THE BATTLE THEME.  Most traditional RPG soundtracks are kind of hard for us.  The instrumentation is usually limited to more organic sounds.  The time signatures are sometimes funky (for us, anyway.)  And, worst of all, we are limited to about 40-45 second loops (due to the prevalence of random battles, there is simply no sense in making the loops any longer; the player will never really hear beyond 30 seconds before being interrupted.)

The one track that doesn't seem to suffer from any of these down-sides is the battle theme.  For whatever reason, battle tracks just seem to jump out of us. We usually start our brainstorming by imagining the pixelated battleground.  With this image in mind, we start jamming.  Within seconds, we always seem to have a good skeleton of a track that we can then expand upon.

This is the Random Battle Theme for the game Dungeonmen.  Honestly, this soundtrack was a bit of a chore to get through.  There were nights that were downright painful for us.  In the end, we turned out a really good soundtrack, but man was it tough.  A looming deadline didn't really help matters, either.

Having said all that, the three battle themes actually came quite easy.  Maybe that's why they stand out so much.  Then again, maybe it's all in our heads and these tracks are no better or worse than the rest of the soundtrack.  Anyways... hope you dig it.  We'll post more of our BATTLE THEMES in the future.
